Safeguarding Democratic Legitimacy: A Call for International Oversight in the Joko Widodo Diploma Allegation
Distinguished global leaders, representatives, and esteemed people around the world,
I am Wilson Lalengke, a journalist and human right activist from Indonesia. I am also a petitioner of the 80th session of the United Nations Fourth Committee 2025 who is now an intense observer of the Joko Widodo Diploma Case.
Today, I stand before you to address a matter that transcends borders and politics—a matter that speaks to the very heart of democratic integrity and legal transparency.
The recent allegations concerning former Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s academic credentials have sparked intense public debate and legal scrutiny. While domestic institutions are actively engaged, the nature of this case demands a resolution that is not only lawful but universally credible.
I propose an internationally supervised mechanism to verify the authenticity of the diploma in question. This is not a challenge to sovereignty—it is a reaffirmation of Indonesia’s commitment to the rule of law, transparency, and global cooperation.
In resolving the legal case regarding Joko Widodo’s alleged fake diploma, we might consider the following points.
• An independent verification panel, composed of international academic and legal experts, can assess the diploma’s legitimacy without political interference.
• Legal observers from respected bodies such as the International Commission of Jurists or ASEAN’s human rights commission can ensure procedural fairness.
• Diplomatic channels and Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties can facilitate cross-border cooperation with the issuing institution.
• A public report, peer-reviewed and accessible, will restore public trust and set a precedent for responsible governance.
This proposal is grounded in international law as follow.
• The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 10, guarantees the right to a fair and public hearing.
• The UNESCO Global Convention provides a framework for academic verification across borders.
• The ASEAN Human Rights Declaration upholds transparency and accountability.
